It is not mandatory that this asana must be done on an empty stomach. But if you are preceding or following it up with yoga asanas, it is best you have your meals at least four to six hours before you do this asana. Also, make sure that your bowels are clean.

2. Adho Mukha Svanasana

Downward facing dog pose or Adho Mukha Shvanasana is an asana which is pronounced as A-doh MOO-kah shvah-NAS-anna. Sanskrit: अधोमुखश्वानासन; Adho – Forward; Mukha – Face; Svana – Dog; Asana – Pose;

The name comes from the Sanskrit words adhas (अधस्) meaning ‘down’, mukha (मुख) meaning ‘face’, śvāna (श्वान) meaning ‘dog’, and āsana (आसन) meaning ‘posture’. The Adho Mukha Svanasana looks similar to a how a dog looks when it bends forward. This asana has numerous amazing benefits that make it extremely essential for you to practice it every day. The best part is, even a beginner can get the hang of this asana with great ease.

It is extremely essential to make sure that your bowels and stomach are empty before you perform this asana. It might be a good idea to give a gap of a few hours between your last meal and the exercise. This will allow enough time for your food to digest well. This asana works best when practiced in the morning.

3. Dhanurasana

Sanskrit: धनुरासन; Dhanur – Bow, Asana – Pose; Pronounced As dah-noo-rah-sah-nah

Dhanurasana or the Bow Pose is one of the 12 basic Hatha Yoga poses. It is also one of the three main back stretching exercises. It gives the entire back a good stretch, thus imparting flexibility as well as strength to the back.

You must make sure to keep your stomach and bowels empty before you practice this asana. Have your meals at least four to six hours before you do the asana so that your food gets digested, and there is enough energy for you to expand during the practice.

It is best to practice yoga first thing in the morning. But in the event you cannot work out in the morning, it is alright to practice it in the evening.

4. Sarvangasana

Sanskrit: सर्वाङ्गासन; Salamba – Supported, Sarva – All, Anga – Limbs, Asana – Pose; Pronounced As – sahr-vahn-gah-sah-nah

This asana is called the “mother” or “queen” of all the asanas. It literally translates into all limb pose. But it is called a shoulder stand, only because the weight of your body rests on the bony part of your shoulders. This asana is a powerful one, and it is an inversion that helps you ease into the more complex inversions. This important yoga asana is one of the first ones you will practice and will continue to practice, even after you have mastered it.

This asana must be practiced either first thing in the morning or at least four to six hours after a meal. The stomach and bowels must be empty when you practice this asana. The food ingested must be digested so that there is enough energy to expend during the practice.

5. Halasana

Halasana or Plow Pose is an asana. Sanskrit: हलासन; Hala – Plow, Asana – Posture; Pronounced As – hah-LAHS-anna

Just like the other yoga poses, the Halasana is named so because the basic shape of the pose resembles a typical plow used in Tibet and India. The plow is also a mythical symbol that features in many stories from Tibet, China, India, and Egypt. It might be interesting to know that King Janaka found a beautiful baby girl as he was plowing the field. He adopted her and named her Sita. She grew up and married Rama. Just make sure your stomach and bowels are empty. It is a good idea to leave a gap of at least four to six hours between your meal and the practice.

6. Shavasana

Shavasana, Savasana or Corpse Pose is an asana where Shava – Corpse; Asana – Pose; and Pronounced as – Shuh-vah-sana; Sanskrit: शवासन

This pose resembles the posture of a dead body and is, therefore, named after it. Shava (शव, Śava) meaning “corpse”, and Asana (आसन, Āsana) meaning “posture” or “seat”.This position seems quite easy, but it could also be one of the hardest since you need to completely relax your body and mind. This pose is usually practiced after an active yoga session. It instills deep healing and completely relaxes your body. You can also practice this pose whenever you are extremely tired and need to get back to work quickly. It is refreshing and rejuvenating.
